چکیده
We perform the first observational test of dark matter in the form of cold (3 K) fractal clouds, as described by Pfenniger et al. (1994) and Pfenniger & Combes (1994). This is accomplished by probing for HI absorption in the halo of NGC 3079 against the background quasar, Q 0957+561, which is separated from the centre of NGC 3079 by 64 kpc, in projection. No absorption is detected to a limit of 3 ∆Tb/(−Tc) = 0 ·01. We have considered models for HI + H2 clouds characterised by the cloud radius and fractal dimension. Using the upper limit on absorption, we have ruled out a limited but interesting region of this parameter space. The observations do not rule out the possibility that all the dark matter could be hidden in the form of cold fractal clouds. By contrast, if the gas is diffuse with unity filling factors, then HI cannot constitute more than ∼ 10−5, by mass, of the galaxy’s dark

An Observational Test of Dark Matter as Cold Fractal Clouds
Using the VLA, we have performed the first observational test of dark matter in the form of cold, primordial fractal clouds, as envisioned by Pfenniger, Combes, & Martinet (1994) and Pfenniger & Combes (1994). We show that, after a Hubble Time, primordial fractal clouds will convert most of their HI to H2, but a small fraction of HI remains which is optically thick. This opens up a new window f...
متن کاملEmission Line Ratios and Variations in Temperature and Ionization State in the Diffuse Ionized Gas of Five Edge–on Galaxies
We present spectroscopic observations of ionized gas in the disk–halo regions of five edge–on galaxies, covering a wavelength range from [O II] λ3727Å to [S II] λ6716.4Å. The inclusion of the [O II] emission provides additional constraints on the properties of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), in particular, the origin of the observed spatial variations in the line intensity ratios. We have derive...
متن کاملAstronomy and Astrophysics Ngc 3079: X-ray Emission from the Nuclear Super-bubble and Halo
We report the results of the spatial and spectral analysis of the ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3079. We detected several sources in the field of NGC 3079 with both PSPC and HRI, and complex emission from the inner 5 ′ around NGC 3079. We have identified possible counterparts for several of the sources outside NGC 3079 by comparison with optical plates and cat...

متن کاملOutflow versus Infall in Spiral Galaxies: Metal Absorption in the Halo of Ngc
Gas accreting onto a galaxy will be of low metallicity while halo gas due to a galactic fountain will be of near-solar metallicity. We test these predictions by measuring the metal absorption line properties of halo gas 5 kpc above the plane of the edge-on galaxy NGC 891, using observations taken with HST/STIS toward a bright background quasar. Metal absorption lines of Fe ii, Mg ii, and Mg i i...
